4 years agoNew York Mets left-handed pitcher Steven Matz and right-hander Dellin Betances both played catch off flat ground Friday, the first step on the comeback trail from their respective ailments. Matz landed on the IL on Sunday due to discomfort in his pitching shoulder, while Betances hit the IL on the same day due to discomfort in his right lat. The Mets are currently attempting to cover gaps in both their rotation and bullpen, with Betances’ absence particularly being felt at the back end of the club’s relief corps. Their returns are likely at least a week away, limiting the amount of time that they’ll have to contribute if they do make it back in 2020.--Jesse Borek
