Yankees Asking About Steven Matz
5 years agoWith the New York Yankees starting pitching staff decimated by injuries, the Yankees have reportedly reached out to the New York Mets about starting pitcher Steven Matz. According to the report, the Mets are willing to listen to offers, but any deal appears, at least in the immediate term, unlikely. The Mets are deep at the back-end of their rotation with Matz, Michael Wacha, Rick Porcello, and David Peterson all performing well so far this spring. That said, the Mets asking price for Matz, a major-league-ready position player in return, is likely too high. In addition, it is unlikely the Mets would unnecessarily thin out their SP ranks before the season begins. Because Matz is currently in a competition with Wacha for the fifth rotation spot, it is, however, a situation worth monitoring. Should Matz get traded to the Yankees, any question regarding his security in a pitching rotation would be eliminated. Of course, Matz would move to a much more difficult home stadium, away from pitcher-friendly CitiField. At this point, though, Matz remains worth a late-round selection in deep mixed leagues and in NL-only formats.
