Spencer Schwellenbach Making Adjustments On The Fly
5 months agoAtlanta Braves rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach, who gave up just one run in six innings against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in just his seventh major-league start, has been making adjustments on the fly since joining the Braves' rotation on May 29. Schwellenbach, 24, has added a sinker, tweaked the grips on all three of his fastballs, and has moved from the third-base side to the middle of the rubber. The former second-rounder pitched and played shortstop at Nebraska before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Although he's only gone 2-4 with a 5.02 ERA (3.57 FIP) and 1.27 WHIP in 37 2/3 innings over his seven starts, Schwellenbach has delivered 38 strikeouts and only nine walks and has solidified himself as the No. 5 in Atlanta's starting rotation heading into the All-Star break.
