Six Padres Outfielders Vying For One Position
7 years agoPer Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Padres Manager Andy Green put a positive spin on the overcrowded outfield situation in San Diego. With Manuel Margot and Wil Myers occupying two spots, Hunter Renfroe, Jose Pirela, Alex Dickerson, Franchy Cordero, Travis Jankowski and Matt Szczur will all fight for playing time in the remaining position. Green was optimistic on position flexibility for his squad. Renfroe is the name brand of the group, hammering lefty pitching last year (1.077 OPS) but struggling mightily against righties (.636 OPS). Pirela impressed in 83 games last season and could also find playing time in the infield. Cordero is considered a valued prospect while Dickerson, Jankowski and Szczur will likely be competing for bench and part-time roles on the final roster. Avoiding these players until further clarity develops is likely the most prudent course of action.
