Shane Van Gisbergen Wrecks And Fails To Defend Last Year's Win At Chicago
5 months agoIn Sunday's Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course, Shane Van Gisbergen finished 40th, regardless of his strong performance earlier in the race. Starting from the fifth position, SVG was expected to be one of the top favorites to win this year's event as the defending race winner. In the first stage, SVG steadily made moves and captured the lead from Ty Gibbs on lap 12. The No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet driver never looked back for the rest of the stage, easily winning it. SVG took a pit stop at the end of the first stage to change tires and add fuel but lost track position and restarted fifth. As the second stage began, Chase Briscoe trailed behind SVG and, on lap 26, lost control and made contact. This sent SVG into the wall, and with too much damage to continue, the former Supercars champion obtained his first career Cup Series DNF. Van Gisbergen's next Cup Series appearance is scheduled to be at Watkins Glen International on September 15, where he will surely be a threat to win as his other road course starts.
