Shane van Gisbergen's learning curve has been more severe than most people expected. Despite driving a full-time chartered entry for Trackhouse Racing, he qualified 37th behind both Cody Ware and Jesse Love in a rare non-drafting track Beard Motorsports entry. It doesn't help that Trackhouse seems to have slower cars especially in qualifying than they did in any previous year, but it's also becoming apparent that the Kiwi might be too old a dog to learn the new trick of oval racing, especially when he is only a few years younger than declining Cup Series stars like Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski who look nearly washed up at times. His speed on intermediates has been dismal with average running positions of 32nd at both Las Vegas and Homestead. Until that changes, he's not really worthy of consideration for DFS play on this track type.

Trackhouse Racing's Shane Van Gisbergen will start 36th for Sunday's Jack Link's 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. It is a new career-worst starting position for Van Gisbergen at the site, as well as his first race there where he will start outside of the top 30. In two previous starts at Talladega in the Cup Series, Van Gisbergen has two top-30 finishes, including a top-15 in his last race there. After nine races this season, SVG has two top-20 finishes and scored positive Place Differential four times. Fantasy players should feel great about SVG as a DFS value option this week. The No. 88 Chevrolet driver has plenty of upside and has never finished worse than 28th at Talladega. SVG is a solid choice that is playable in all formats for this week's race.

The Trackhouse Racing cars have had issues with speed on short tracks in recent years, and Saturday's Bristol qualifying session was no exception. Obviously a concrete oval is far out of Supercars veteran Shane van Gisbergen's wheelhouse, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the Kiwi rookie only qualified 36th. What might be more surprising is that he qualified right alongside his veteran teammate Ross Chastain. This suggests that maybe Trackhouse's slow cars were a bigger issue than his inexperience, but his inexperience does mean he won't be likely to provide good enough feedback on how to make the cars better. While Chastain will probably make his way into the top 15 at some point, SVG probably won't make much progress in the race at all and won't be worth DFS consideration, even at $5,800.

Trackhouse Racing's Shane Van Gisbergen qualified 36th for Sunday's Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. This marks Van Gisbergen's lowest start position of the season in a race, as well as the third consecutive race where he will start outside of the top 30. In his only previous Cup start at Darlington in September 2024 with Kaulig Racing, SVG started 34th and finished in the 26th position. Through seven races so far this season, SVG has two top-30 finishes and earned positive Place Differential three times. In practice, the No. 88 Chevrolet driver ranked fourth in overall lap averages and ranked 20th in 15 consecutive lap averages. With his starting position at the back, cheap salary ($5,400 on DraftKings), and practice speeds, SVG is a driver who can be comfortably relied on as a safe cap flexibility play with upside for DFS, which is best suited for cash games.
