Shane McClanahan 2025 Fantasy Baseball Outlook: Health, Where Art Thou?
4 mins agoShane McClanahan has the potential to be a top-10 starting pitcher in fantasy. However, he hasn't been able to stay on the field to do so. He missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery (TJS). While McClanahan is expected to be ready for Opening Day, the Rays are already anticipating limiting him to around 150 innings. That will obviously have a detrimental effect on McClanahan's fantasy value. Given he had only totaled 404.2 IP in the three seasons prior to last year, expecting any more from McClanahan would have been optimistic without factoring in TJS. When we take into consideration that this was McClanahan's second TJS, we have a major red flag. There's no doubting what he's capable of. McClanahan has a 3.02 ERA in the Majors to go with a 28.0% K%. With two major elbow surgeries now behind him, expecting McClanahan to operate at that level is a stretch. He could still have electric stuff and put up elite numbers. But tempering expectations is the best course of action. Reaching for McClanahan in drafts is bound to end up in disappointment for fantasy managers, especially given the limited workload.
