Shane Greene Falters Again, Closing Job In Jeopardy
7 years agoDetroit Tigers reliever Shane Greene had yet another rough outing on Monday after entering in a tie ballgame and immediately giving up three earned runs to Tampa Bay. Greene managed to get just one out in the inning in which he allowed a walk and two homers. Prior to Monday's appearance, Greene had blown two of his previous three save chances. Meanwhile, setup man Joe Jimenez has been quite solid over 14 innings of work with a 2.57 ERA and 11 strikeouts. If Greene continues to struggle, it would figure that Jimenez would get the bulk of the save chances. It's a situation to monitor closely.

Cubs To Call Up Shane Greene
2 years agoThe Chicago Cubs are promoting veteran right-hander Shane Greene when rosters expand on Friday. The 34-year-old has been starting at Triple-A Iowa, according to sources, but he hasn't started a major-league game since 2016. Since then, he's picked up 67 saves in the majors, mostly with the Detroit Tigers. Greene last appeared in the big leagues in 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, but he only threw three innings and allowed two earned runs. In five starts in 2023 for Iowa, he's only allowed six runs (four earned) on 12 hits while walking nine and striking out 20 in 16 1/3 frames. It would be cool to see Greene make a start for the Cubbies down the stretch this year, but he'll most likely operate in a long-relief role out of their bullpen.

Cubs Sign Shane Greene To Minor-League Deal
2 years agoThe Chicago Cubs signed free-agent reliever Shane Greene to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. He will report to the team's Rookie-level club in the Arizona Complex League before eventually playing for Triple-A Iowa. Greene only threw three innings in the big leagues last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, allowing two runs while walking one and fanning two. The 34-year-old right-handed veteran hasn't pitched at all in 2023 and had a 5.50 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 34 1/3 relief innings in the minors for the Yankees and Dodgers last year. Greene does have 67 career saves in nine major-league seasons, but he'll strictly give the Cubs some veteran relief depth for now.

Shane Greene Elects Free Agency
3 years agoVeteran reliever Shane Greene has cleared waivers and he has chosen to head back into free agency rather than accept his outright assignment from the New York Yankees. Green was designated for assignment by the Yankees this past week. This was his second stint with the Pinstripes and it didn't last long. He signed with the Yankees a few months back after he was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made just one appearance with the Yankees this year and allowed two earned runs over one inning.

Shane Greene Signs With Yankees
3 years agoFree-agent right-hander Shane Greene signed with the New York Yankees on Thursday and was assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Greene became a free agent after he was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month. The 33-year-old veteran reliever pitched two scoreless innings for the Dodgers, but he had allowed five earned runs while walking four and fanning nine in 7 2/3 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City before LA cut him. Greene will represent organizational relief depth for New York. He has 67 career saves in nine major league seasons, but he's no longer fantasy relevant at this time.
