Seth Lugo Converts Third Save On Sunday
4 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Seth Lugo converted his third save of the season on Sunday in the Mets' 4-2 win over the Marlins. Lugo was called on to pitch the ninth inning and allowed just one walk and struck out one in his one inning of work. On the season, Lugo boasts a 2.00 ERA, a 0.56 WHIP, and has nine strikeouts in nine innings pitched. The Mets have employed a closer-by-committee due to Edwin Diaz's struggles. That said, while it still is a fluid situation, it appears that Lugo is beginning to take the lead as the closer in the Mets' committee. Diaz was called on to pitch the eighth inning on Sunday setting up Lugo (and he struggled in that role as well). In addition, Dellin Betances is still experiencing velocity issues, and, on Saturday, Jeurys Familia reverted back to having troubling command issues. The knock on Lugo has always been his purported inability to pitch on back-to-back days. However, it should be noted that Lugo pitched against the Marlins on both Saturday and Sunday. Owners in need of saves should be targeting Lugo if he isn't somehow already rostered.
