Seth Barton Second Detroit Defenseman Of Third Round
6 years agoWith the allure of exciting forwards in the first round, the Red Wings had to put on hold their desire to focus on defense in this draft, but made sure to select a pair of sizeable blueliners in the third. Seth Barton of the BCHL was selected 81st overall by Detroit, the second of two defenseman the Wings took in the third. A Kelowna native, Barton played his junior hockey close to home; part of one season with the Nanaimo Clippers and one season most recently with the Trail Smoke Eaters. In 49 games, Barton led his team among defenseman in goals with 6 and added 27 assists for 33 regular season points. A strong postseason showing followed, with three goals and 11 points in 16 playoff games. At 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, the right-shooting Barton has decent size, differentiating him from fellow Red Wings prospect and BCHL product, Dennis Cholowski. Barton needs to gain experience against higher level hockey, but won’t be eligible for the AHL or ECHL until the 2019-20 season.
