Sean Murphy Closes In On Return To Game Action
4 years agoOakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy (lung) has resumed taking batting practice in anticipation of making his Cactus League debut in the near future. Murphy has been working his way back from a collapsed lung, but manager Bob Melvin stated Thursday that the backstop was "progressing" toward a return to the field. How quickly Murphy is or isn't able to ramp up likely changes the Oakland 26-man roster math: when healthy, Murphy will be the team's primary catcher, but without him, Aramis Garcia and Austin Allen are slated to share duties. Having finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting last season, Murphy knocked 12 of his 27 hits for extra bases; his 206 ADP (and No. 12 catcher ranking) puts on the fringes of most season-long formats, but with an .846 OPS over 200 career plate appearances, he may be worth the roll of the dice for aggressive season-long fantasy managers come Draft time.
