3 weeks agoGiven the run he's been on over the last few seasons, it is a bit shocking that Scottie Scheffler hasn't managed to win this event despite giving it incredible chances in recent memory. He's been a bridesmaid at Memorial Park for two of the last three years, and with the slow and frustrating start to 2025, getting back in the winner's circle this week could be exactly what he needs to jumpstart the momentum before Augusta. Unsurprisingly, the work on and around the green has been his issue, as the 28-year-old still ranks second on the season in strokes gained tee to green (+1.685). Compared to someone like Rory McIlroy, who's teeing it up this week to keep the mind sharp and the competitive juices flowing, look for Scheffler to put much more effort into these four days and be a more useful asset in DFS lineups.

1 month agoAlthough Scottie Scheffler gained strokes in nearly every aspect of his game at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his struggles with his putter -- where he lost 5.3 strokes -- kept him from climbing the leaderboard as he ultimately finished T11. He now turns his attention to The PLAYERS Championship, where he's looking to secure a third consecutive victory. In his back-to-back wins in 2023 and 2024, Scheffler gained a combined 33.046 strokes from tee to green, and he'll need to excel in this category again, with a particular focus on accuracy off the tee and on approach. Scheffler ranks 112th in driving accuracy but is 50th in strokes gained off the tee (0.289 per round), second in strokes gained from tee to green (1.341 per round), and seventh in approach (0.960 per round). He also ranks in the 99th percentile over the last 12 months in proximity from 100-150 yards, a range that accounted for 32.3% of all approach shots at Sawgrass last year. Fantasy managers should once again play Scheffler with confidence as he looks for the three-peat at TPC Sawgrass.

This marks his longest drought since this time last year, when he secured his first win of the season at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational. To repeat that success, Scheffler will need to be elite off the tee and on approach, two areas where he's consistently excelled. Scheffler hasn't lost strokes off the tee in a tour event since Pebble Beach in February of 2024, and he ranks seventh in strokes gained on approach, gaining 0.960 strokes per round. He also ranks in the 98th percentile for proximity from 150-200 yards, a distance that accounts for 35.5% of all approach shots at Bay Hill. In his four trips to the course, he has won twice and posted a T4 and T15. Fantasy managers should continue to play Scheffler confidently in their DFS lineups.

This was Scheffler's second tournament since injuring his hand over Christmas, and it seems any issues are more mental than physical. He now looks ahead to the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, a course where he most recently finished T20 in 2022 and T7 in 2021. This week, driving distance, accuracy, and proximity from 150-plus yards will be crucial. Scheffler ranked second in total driving in 2024 and is in the 98th percentile in proximity to the hole from 150-200 yards over the last 12 months, a distance that accounts for 39.6% of all approach shots at Torrey Pines. He is worth his $12,300 price tag on DraftKings, as Scheffler should once again find himself in contention this week.
