New York Yankees relief pitcher Scott Effross (elbow), who had Tommy John surgery last October, started a throwing program on Monday. He's still in the early going of his rehab from elbow reconstruction. There's a chance that the 29-year-old right-hander could make it back for the Yankees at the tail end of the 2023 season, but it's probably unlikely. He spent his second MLB season in 2022 with the Yankees and Chicago Cubs, posting a 2.54 ERA (2.46 FIP), 1.06 WHIP, his first four career saves and 62 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings over 60 appearances (one start). What Effross lacks in velocity, he makes up with movement on his pitches.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

New York Yankees right-hander Scott Effross (hamstring) is getting close to facing live hitters in batting practice. It means that Effross is nearing a minor-league rehab assignment after starting the 2025 season on the injured list with a Grade 2 hamstring strain that he suffered in late February during spring training. The 31-year-old veteran reliever began a throwing program in early April. It remains to be seen when Effross will be able to rejoin New York's bullpen, but barring any setbacks, it could be in early May. He appeared in only three games in relief for the Yankees in 2024 and allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks. Effross has a career 2.89 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, four saves, 82 strikeouts and 18 walks in 74 2/3 major-league innings since debuting with the Chicago Cubs in 2021.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Scott Effross (hamstring) suffered a setback with his hamstring injury, according to manager Aaron Boone. Effross is now in a holding pattern instead of advancing to face live hitters. Effross suffered a Grade 2 left-hamstring strain in his first outing of spring training back on Feb. 25 and will now miss even more time. The fact that the 31-year-old hasn't even progressed to facing live hitters means we most likely won't see him make his 2025 season debut until sometime in May. Injuries have become a big problem for Effross, as he didn't pitch at all in 2023 and made just three relief appearances for the Yankees in 2024, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two in 3 1/3 frames. New York probably isn't holding their breathe for him to contribute much in their bullpen.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

New York Yankees right-hander Scott Effross (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left-hamstring strain, according to manager Aaron Boone. Effross received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Thursday, but it's going to be a while before he's able to return. The 31-year-old veteran injured his hamstring on his only pitch during his Grapefruit League appearance earlier this week. The injury surely means that he will open the 2025 regular season on the injured list after he was only able to appear in 16 big-league games since the start of the 2022 season due to injuries. Effross did not pitch at all in the majors in 2023. It's a tough break for the former 15th-round selection of the Chicago Cubs in 2015 out of Indiana University Bloomington. Effross has a 2.89 ERA, four saves, a 1.06 WHIP and 82:18 K:BB in three big-league seasons over 74 2/3 innings pitched.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Scott Effross (hamstring) threw one pitch in the Grapefruit League game on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins before injuring his leg. Effross appeared to grab near his hamstring before walking off the mound with a trainer. The 31-year-old veteran will likely undergo tests to determine the severity of his injury and should be considered day-to-day for now. After missing all of 2023 following Tommy John surgery, Effross returned in 2024 with the Yankees to post a career-worst 5.40 ERA (7.67 FIP), a 1.50 WHIP and a 2:2 K:BB in just 3 1/3 innings of relief at the major-league level. He made 32 total appearances when considering his work in the minors. Depending on the severity of his hamstring injury, Effross could need to begin the 2025 regular season on the injured list. Stay tuned for an update on his injury.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
