Salvador Perez Enjoying Productive World Baseball Classic
2 years agoKansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez is enjoying a big World Baseball Classic for Team Venezuela, who sit atop Pool D with a clean 4-0 record for the tournament. The 32-year-old Perez has gone 5-for-10, with four of those hits coming in extra-base variety via a home run and three doubles. The veteran backstop now owns a massive 1.645 OPS in a small three-game sample after a solid start to his spring in Cactus League action with the Royals. Before departing for the World Baseball Classic, Perez hit .313 with one HR and one stolen base alongside a .813 OPS across 16 at-bats. After tying Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the MLB lead with 48 HR in 2021, Perez predictably regressed to 23 long balls in 2022, albeit in just 114 games. He will once again serve as the Royals' primary catcher in 2023 but will also see a good chunk of time as a designated hitter.
