Saints Really Wanted Tommy Stevens
5 years agoThe New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers engaged in a bidding war during the 2020 draft for Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens. The Saints had traded their remaining picks late in the draft on Day 2, so they had to sit and wait. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady worked with Stevens in their time together at Penn State and had zeroed in on Stevens as a target in the draft. The Panthers were negotiating with Stevens before the draft was over, but the Saints said they'd match Carolina's offer and pitched Stevens the idea of being "Taysom Hill 2.0." Securing Stevens became head coach Sean Payton's "project." New Orleans traded into the seventh round to select him, and Stevens will now join a QB group that includes Drew Brees, Hill and Jameis Winston. Stevens will face an uphill battle to become a starter in the post-Brees era, but it's interesting to note how much the Saints and Payton wanted Stevens in the end.
