7 years agoColorado Rockies first baseman Ryan McMahon is the clear front-runner for the first base job this year with outfielder Ian Desmond mainly focusing on left field. However, McMahon hasn't heard anything definitive from manager Bud Black. The 23-year-old was just 3-for-19 in 17 games with Colorado at the end of last year, but he hit .374 with 39 extra-base hits and 14 home runs with Triple-A in 70 games. Pat Valaika could be another option at first if the team doesn't re-sign Mark Reynolds. McMahon had high BABIPs in Double-A and Triple-A last year, but he also lowered his strikeout rate, and he has plus power and underrated speed. There's a good chance he could be the starting first baseman for most of the 2018 season, making him a sneaky late-round pick in dynasty, NL-only and deep mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoColorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon and outfielders Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Jones are all out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale at Coors Field against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on the bump. Aaron Schunk will start at third and hit out of the nine-hole, Sam Hilliard will start in left and bat seventh, and catcher Jacob Stallings will be the designated hitter and bat fifth. Hunter Goodman is catching and hitting sixth. Hilliard has hit .250 (27-for-108) in his return to the Rockies this year with eight homers and 23 RBI in 49 games played. Stallings has hit .260 (59-for-227) with a career-high nine homers in 76 games, and Schunk has hit just .194 (14-for-72) with one homer and three RBI in his first 32 big-league games. None of Colorado's replacements are particularly attractive DFS sleepers, even at Coors Field.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoColorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the hosting Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Aaron Schunk will make the start at the hot corner and will bat ninth against Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery. McMahon will get a day of rest with Arizona throwing a southpaw after going hitless in eight at-bats with four strikeouts in the first two games of the series in the desert. The 29-year-old left-handed slugger was named to his first All-Star squad this year, but he's struggled since the Midsummer Classic and has gone 4-for-38 (.105) with two doubles, three RBI, a stolen base and 18 strikeouts in 11 games. The rookie Schunk has gone 7-for-41 (.171) in his first 20 big-league games and is still searching for his first home run.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

9 months agoColorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon and third baseman Ryan McMahon will head to the bench Saturday afternoon against the San Francisco Giants. The usual catcher, Elias Diaz, will DH and bat fifth, while rookie Aaron Schunk gets a start at third base and will bat ninth. The Rockies and Giants play two games today, so expect both Blackmon and McMahon to be in the lineup for the nightcap, unless they are traded. Blackmon is hitting .256 with seven home runs, 34 RBI, five stolen bases and 42 runs scored in 2024. McMahon is hitting .267 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI, three stolen bases and 50 runs scored.--Mike Carter - RotoBaller

9 months agoThe Colorado Rockies have told MLB teams that All-Star third baseman Ryan McMahon won't be moved at this year's trade deadline, according to a source. McMahon made the All-Star squad for the first time in his eight-year career in 2024 and is currently hitting .270/.355/.447 with a career-best .802 OPS, 15 home runs, 47 RBI and 50 runs scored in 99 games for the last-place Rockies. His trade value will probably never be higher, and he's also under contract in Colorado through the 2028 season. Apparently the Rockies want to build around the 29-year-old left-handed-hitting infielder for years to come. McMahon resides in one of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball in Coors Field, so staying in Colorado is probably best for his fantasy value for the rest of the 2024 campaign and beyond.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
