Royals Sign Mike Mayers To Minor-League Deal
Mike Mayers to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Mayers became a free agent this offseason after he rejected an outright assignment from the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old reliever posted a 5.68 ERA (6.37 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings over 24 appearances (three starts) for the Halos in 2022. There's a good chance he'll see action in the big leagues for the Royals in 2023, and he could even make the Opening Day roster out of spring training. Mayer has a career 5.10 ERA (4.63 FIP), five saves, a 1.40 WHIP and a 24 percent strikeout rate in 236 1/3 innings over 198 outings (six starts). He won't carry any fantasy value.

Mike Mayers To Start On Wednesday
Mike Mayers will get the start on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. It will be Mayers' first start of the season for the Angels after 18 relief appearances in which he's posted a 5.22 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 27 strikeouts and nine walks in 29 1/3 innings pitched. He's thrown 9 1/3 innings in his last two outings in long relief, so he's stretched out enough to make a spot start this week. Mayers surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits (four home runs) while walking one and striking out nine in those last two outings, so fantasy managers should be looking elsewhere on Wednesday.

Mike Mayers Has Contract Purchased
Mike Mayers has had his contract selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and will join the team's 40-man roster. The 30-year-old righty was outrighted to the minors back in early June but has now made his way back to the majors. He posted a poor 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 14:6 K/BB ratio over 16 2/3 innings (15 appearances) earlier this season. He'll add some depth to the Los Angeles bullpen but doesn't offer a whole lot of fantasy value.
