Robert Suarez Opts Out Of His Deal
2 years agoSan Diego Padres right-handed reliever Robert Suarez opted out of his deal with the team on Monday and will now become a popular free agent. Suarez declined his $5 million player option for the 2023 season. The 31-year-old played on a one-year, $5 million deal in 2022 after putting up impressive numbers in Japan in 2020 and 2021. He went 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA (3.22 FIP), 1.05 WHIP, 12 holds, one save and 61 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings during the regular season and looked downright unhittable at times in the postseason before giving up the home run to Bryce Harper in the National League Championship Series that sent the Phillies to the World Series. Even if Suarez doesn't land a closing gig with another team in 2023, he could be useful for his strikeout ratio as a late-inning reliever.
