Red Sox Sign Matt Andriese
4 years agoThe Boston Red Sox agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Matt Andriese on Wednesday. The deal includes a team option for the 2022 season. In addition, Boston claimed catcher Deivy Grullon off waivers from the Reds. Andriese made 16 appearances (one start) for the Angels in 2020 and had a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a .184 opponent's batting average while allowing 16 earned runs in 32 innings. The 31-year-old allowed only two runs in 12 1/3 relief innings in eight September outings with no walks and 13 strikeouts. Andriese was taken in the third round by the Padres in 2011 and is 26-34 with a 4.57 ERA in 183 career outings (50 starts) over six seasons with the Rays, Diamondbacks and Angels. He's become mostly a reliever in recent seasons but could serve as a swing man for Boston's rotation, if needed.
