Red Sox Sign Jake Diekman
3 years agoThe Boston Red Sox will sign free-agent left-hander Jake Diekman, pending a physical, according to a source. It's believed to be a multi-year deal, but the exact details of the contract are unknown. The southpaw reliever had a 3.86 ERA, .211 batting average against and a 1.34 WHIP in 67 relief outings (60 2/3 innings) for the Oakland Athletics in 2021. He also averaged 11.5 strikeouts and 5.0 walks per nine innings and struck out 31.7% of the hitters he faced. In 529 major league outings, Diekman has a 3.73 ERA. Along with fellow lefty Matt Strahm, who was also signed Sunday, Diekman will be a valuable left arm in Boston's bullpen in 2022. Diekman will mainly be a setup man, but he could have some appeal for his high whiff rate in deeper AL-only leagues.
