Red Sox Making Progress With Hirokazu Sawamura
4 years agoThe Boston Red Sox have made progress on a deal with Japanese relief pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura, according to a source. If a deal is finalized, it will likely be a major league deal for Sawamura. The 32-year-old right-hander had a 2.77 ERA over nine seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball and spent the 2020 season with the Yomiuri Giants and Chiba Lotte Marines. He struggled with the Giants but posted a 1.71 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 10 walks over 22 relief appearances for the Marines. Sawamura has been one of the best relief arms in Japan over the last few seasons and could wind up in a high-leverage role with whatever MLB club he signs with, although it would probably be a stretch to assume that he'll be fantasy relevant right away.
