Pirates Designate Brent Honeywell For Assignment
4 months agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander Brent Honeywell for assignment on Friday, according to sources. Honeywell didn't even make it a full week on the Pirates' big-league roster after they selected his contract from the minors last weekend. The 29-year-old former top prospect of the Tampa Bay Rays couldn't stay healthy early in his career and is close to washing out of the league entirely at this point. In 3 1/3 innings of relief for Pittsburgh this year, he gave up an earned run while walking two and striking out one. He went 1-3 at Triple-A Indianapolis with a 4.85 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with seven saves, 33 strikeouts and 17 walks in 39 innings pitched. After coming up as a starter earlier in his career, Honeywell has become a reliever and could be headed back to Indy if he clears waivers.
