Phillies Call Up Former First Overall Pick Mark Appel
2 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies have called up right-handed pitcher Mark Appel from Triple-A. He is taking the roster spot of reliever Connor Brogdon, who was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Appel was selected as the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft by the Houston Astros. He dealt with both injuries and struggles on the mound following the draft and even wound up stepping away from baseball for over three years before signing a minors deal with the Phillies in 2021. The 30-year-old has made 19 relief appearances at Triple-A this year while pitching to a 1.61 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP.
