9 hours agoChicago Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton struck out six batters across 3 1/3 innings of work during his regular-season debut on Thursday evening. Horton allowed just one hit and did not allow a run. This was a strong outing for the top pitching prospect in the Cubs system, as he dealt with numerous injuries last season. In 2024, Horton was only able to log 34 1/3 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A before being shut down with a shoulder strain. He was sharp at Double-A, boasting a stellar 1.10 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP across 16 1/3 innings. However, he took a step back in his first look at Triple-A. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status, as he could turn the corner at the top level this season if he's fully healthy. The former seventh overall pick is a name to closely monitor and should make his MLB debut later this season. If he were to continue to produce at a high level at Triple-A, it may come sooner than expected.Source: MiLB.com
9 hours agoHouston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena blasted a home run in the second inning of the Astros' 5-2 victory on Thursday over the Minnesota Twins. The home run was the second of the young season for Pena, as he is showing some power at the plate early on. The Astros were down by one run at the time, so the home run came at a good time. It tied the game up at two a piece and helped gain the momentum needed to run away with it a few innings later. It was Pena's only hit in the afternoon, as he went 1-for-4 and is underproducing thus far with a .130 batting average. Pena is a career .259 hitter, so fantasy managers should expect better days ahead for the Astros' shortstop. Pena will look to keep it rolling as the Astros finish up their series in Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday.Source: ESPN
9 hours agoTampa Bay Rays pitching prospect Ian Seymour matched a career-high as he struck out 10 batters during Thursday's contest against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. However, Seymour took a hard-luck loss as he served up just one run and three hits. His lone blemish came on a Brice Matthews RBI triple in the second frame. Last season, he posted two 10-strikeout performances, one with Double-A Montgomery and the other with Triple-A Durham. Through his first two outings of the campaign, Seymour is enjoying a strong start at Triple-A as he has tossed 10 innings of one-run ball with a stellar 1:15 BB:K. Last summer, the Virginia Tech product made his Triple-A debut and logged 54 innings at that level with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He is a name to closely monitor as he could be approaching his MLB debut, especially if Shane McClanahan (triceps) misses an extended period of the regular season.Source: MiLB.com
9 hours agoBaltimore Orioles catching prospect Samuel Basallo went 2-for-4 with a home run during their victory over the Charlotte Knights on Thursday evening. Basallo hit a two-run shot in the sixth frame, which also scored outfielder Dylan Beavers. This was Basallo's second long ball of the Triple-A regular season and first multi-hit outing of the campaign. Through his first six games of the season, Basallo has held a modest .211/.286/.526 slash line with a 2:4 BB:K. The backstop has been exclusively deployed as a designated hitter as he works his way back from elbow inflammation. While he has not been as productive early on, this two-hit performance could spark a turnaround. Last summer, Basallo held a .276/.339/.447 line split between Double-A and Triple-A. The 20-year-old is considered one of the top prospects in the sport and should be in the mix for a second-half MLB debut.Source: MiLB.com
12 hours agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo went 1-for-5 with a grand slam in a 9-7 loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday. Perdomo launched a homer with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to cut the Yankees' lead to 9-7, but that was the last of the scoring for the Diamondbacks in the loss. The veteran infielder is off to a nice start in 2025, picking up eight hits and 11 RBI across 25 at-bats for his team. Perdomo will look to stay hot as Arizona opens up a weekend series against the Washington Nationals on Friday.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoLos Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin (back) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out one and walking two in a rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday. Gonsolin landed on the injured list on March 15 with back tightness but appears to be nearing a return to the mound for the big-league club. Gonsolin posted an 8-5 record with a 4.98 ERA in 2023 for the Dodgers before he missed all of the 2024 season after Tommy John surgery.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoLos Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto (shoulder) homered in a rehab game for Triple-A Salt Lake City on Thursday. Neto opened the season on the injured list after having surgery on his right shoulder last November. He began his rehab assignment on Tuesday and will serve as the team's DH for now as the team has no timetable on when he will be able to play defense. Neto hit 23 homers in 2024 while hitting .249 as he nears a return to the big leagues.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoBoston Red Sox second baseman Kristian Campbell went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in an 8-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Campbell launched a two-run homer off Baltimore starter Charlie Morton in the second inning to give the Red Sox a 4-1 lead in the early going. The 22-year-old second baseman is off to a hot start in 2025, picking up 10 hits in 24 at-bats, including two homers and four doubles. Campbell should be a regular consideration in fantasy lineups while he's swinging a hot bat.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoMilwaukee Brewers right-hander Joel Payamps tossed a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. Payamps struck out one while needing just 11 pitches to send the Reds down in order in the top of the ninth inning. The veteran reliever has now appeared in four games this season, allowing five runs over three innings of work while striking out three. He will continue to operate in a setup role behind closer Trevor Megill in the Milwaukee pen.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoMilwaukee Brewers left-hander Nestor Cortes turned in a quality start in a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. Cortes tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six and walking two to earn his first win of the season. The veteran hurler evened his record at 1-1 after a rough season debut against the New York Yankees that saw him cough up eight runs in two innings. Cortes will look to stay in the win column in his next start.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoNew York Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham had a big night in a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Grisham went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, and three RBI to help lead New York to the win. Grisham's homer was a two-run blast off Arizona starter Merrill Kelly in the third inning while his other RBI came on a double in the first inning. The veteran outfielder has been swinging a hot bat in limited playing time for the Yankees this season as he has five hits in 10 at-bats thus far. He will look to stay hot as the Yankees open up a weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoNew York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, a steal, and a walk in a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Chisholm's two-run shot came off Arizona starter Merrill Kelly in the fourth inning to give the Yankees their eighth and ninth runs of the game. The veteran infielder is off to a red-hot start this season, hitting .292 with four homers, six runs, eight RBI, and one steal over 24 at-bats. Chisholm has shown an uptick in power since joining the Yankees as he hit 11 homers in 46 games after being acquired from the Miami Marlins during the 2024 season. He should remain locked into fantasy lineups moving forward.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoNew York Yankees right-hander Luke Weaver picked up the final four outs to preserve a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Weaver held the Diamondbacks scoreless while notching one strikeout to pick up his first save of the season. The veteran hurler usually operates in a set-up role but was called upon to get the save with regular closer Devin Williams away on paternity leave. Williams is expected to return on Friday, which will bump Weaver back to his normal spot. That being said, Weaver is worth a look in fantasy leagues that reward reliever holds. Weaver has now appeared in two games this season, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts for the Yankees.Source: MLB.com
12 hours agoNew York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge turned in another big game in a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Judge went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, two runs, and four RBI in helping power the Yankees to the win. The veteran reached 500 extra-base hits for his career with a three-run homer in the first inning. Overall, Judge is off to a red-hot start, hitting .417 with three doubles, five homers, and 15 RBI thus far. He needs to remain locked into fantasy lineups moving forward.Source: MLB.com
