9 months agoGreen Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon might've played his last season with the organization. Dillon is set to become a free agent this offseason and it doesn't sound like the organization is too eager to bring Dillon back next season. The former second-round pick struggled to establish himself during his contract season. Dillon rushed 178 times for 613 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games. Dillon received plenty of chances with fellow back Aaron Jones missing six games. Despite the extra attempts, Dillon averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry. He should have plenty of interest as a backup, but Dillon will have a tough time finding himself a lead back role heading into next season.Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
9 months agoGreen Bay Packers outside linebacker Preston Smith agreed to a restructured contract with the organization on Wednesday that will create $2.4 million in cap space in 2024. ESPN's Field Yates reports that Smith's compensation this year will be now $10 million. His new deal allows him the chance to earn an additional $4 million in incentives, so he could make more than the $12.3 million he was scheduled to earn in his ninth NFL season before restructuring. The 31-year-old is one of the more underrated edge rushers in the NFL, totaling at least eight sacks in three of his last four seasons.Source: Field Yates
9 months agoThe Green Bay Packers are going to need upgrades at the safety position this offseason, writes The Athletic's Matt Schneidman. Their top three safeties from last year, Darnell Savage Jr., Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford, will all be unrestricted free agents next month. New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley loves one-high safety looks, which require an athletic playmaking safety deep in the middle of the field on an island. It doesn't matter how the Packers look to address the position, whether it be through free agency or the draft, but it's going to be an important position for them in 2024.Source: The Athletic - Matt Schneidman
9 months agoThe Athletic's Matt Schneidman writes that veteran left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) is an obvious cut candidate for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. The five-time All-Pro has played in only 25 of a possible 72 games in the regular season and playoffs over the last four seasons. The torn ACL he suffered in a Week 17 practice in 2020 has lingered, although he's hoping to finally be clear of his knee issues after his most recent surgery. Bakhtiari could still be strong when healthy, but he'll turn 33 in September and cannot be counted on to stay on the field at this point in his career. He's under contract for one more season, and the Packers would free up just less than $21 million in salary cap space if they cut him.Source: The Athletic - Matt Schneidman
10 months agoFormer Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sean Mannion is ending his nine-year NFL career to join the coaching ranks. The 2015 third-round pick is joining Matt LaFleur's staff with the Green Bay Packers as a quarterback and passing game coach. In 14 career games (three starts) Mannion completed 67 of his 110 passing attempts for 573 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He did not play in a game in 2022 or 2023. He'll now move on to the next chapter of his football career and work with 2023 breakout quarterback Jordan Love.Source: Brady Henderson

10 months agoGreen Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that the team intends to sign quarterback Jordan Love to a long-term contract extension this offseason. Love had a successful first year as Green Bay's starter in 2023 and led the team to the Divisional Round of the playoffs after upsetting the Dallas Cowboys in the wild-card round. The 25-year-old signal-caller finished the regular season by completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a 96.1 passer rating. In the last eight games of the regular season, he completed 70.3% of his passes for 2,150 yards, 18 TDs and one interception. Love's performance was even more impressive, considering the lack of experience his receiving corps had. Entering the 2024 season, Love will have low-end QB1 appeal for fantasy managers as he looks to build on his first full season as a starter in the NFL.Source: Pro Football Talk - Myles Simmons
10 months agoBoston College head coach Jeff Hafley is expected to become the new defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, according to sources. Hafley went 22-26 in his four seasons and brought Boston College to Bowl eligibility in three of his four years at the helm. He has resisted NFL coaching opportunities in the past, but his reasons for taking his job are rooted in both the overall state of college football and the opportunity to work for one of the NFL's most respected franchises. Hafley is also a long-time fried of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and a long-time admirer of the Packers franchise. He will replace Joe Barry and be the third different defensive coordinator as LaFleur enters his sixth year as the team's head coach. Hafley was the Browns' defensive backs coach in 2014-15 and the 49ers' DBs coach from 2016-18.Source: ESPN.com - Pete Thamel
10 months agoThe Green Bay Packers requested permission to speak with Baltimore Ravens secondary coach Dennard Wilson for their vacant defensive-coordinator job, according to a source. Wilson is also interviewing for the same position with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday, and the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants have also spoken with him as well. The 41-year-old just finished his first year with the Ravens after spending the two previous seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Wilson started his coaching career as a quality-control coach for the Rams in 2012 before being promoted to defensive backs coach in 2015. He also served as the New York Jets' defensive backs coach from 2017-20, adding passing-game coordinator duties in 2019. The Packers are looking for a new defensive coordinator after firing Joe Barry following the 2023 season.Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport
10 months agoFormer Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is interviewing for the Green Bay Packers' vacant defensive-coordinator job on Friday, according to sources. The Packers fired former defensive coordinator Joe Barry earlier this week despite the team advancing to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Staley was fired by the Chargers late in the 2023 regular season after going 24-24 in two-plus seasons in LA. In Staley's time at the helm, the Chargers' defense was not particularly good, although he did coordinator a strong unit in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams. With several other defensive-coordinator positions still open around the league, there's a good chance Staley could resurface in 2024 while running a defense.Source: The Athletic - Matt Schneidman
10 months agoGreen Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry was relieved of his duties running the team's defense on Wednesday despite the team advancing to the Divisional Round of the postseason, according to sources. Barry could still remain with the organization in some capacity, a possibility that is being discussed. Head coach Matt LaFleur will now be on his third defensive coordinator in six seasons when he hires a replacement for Barry, who had one year left on his deal. Barry had been the team's defensive coordinator since he replaced Mike Pettine in 2021. He had been on the hot seat since 2022, and the Packers defense finished 17th in total defense while also climbing into the top 10 in fewest points allowed. Green Bay's run defense was the issue, as they ranked 28th against the run in 2023, down from 26th in 2022 after they finished 11th in 2021.Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero
10 months agoGreen Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson has played in just 23 of 34 possible games since being selected by the organization in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, mostly due to lower-body injuries. This season, the speedster was held out of eight games because of lingering hamstring issues. According to Ryan Wood of USA Today, Watson is planning to undergo offseason tests to understand why he's had so many hamstring injuries. On resolving the issue, Watson said "I'm not going to say it's my fault, but it's my body, so I need to take accountability for it." The 24-year-old has flashed big-play ability when healthy, averaging 15.0 yards per reception to start his career. However, his inability to be available has been an issue for him and the Packers' young offense. If he can stay healthy, he has plenty of fantasy football upside in 2024, especially now that Jordan Love looks like a high-end franchise quarterback.Source: Ryan Wood - USA Today
10 months agoGreen Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave caught three of four targets for 14 yards during the team's 21-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The rookie actually had fewer targets than backup and fellow rookie Tucker Kraft but ended the night with more receiving yards. It brings an end to a solid rookie campaign from Musgrave. While he missed a six-game stretch at the end of the year due to a kidney laceration, the 23-year-old stepped right back into the starting role when he returned and immediately impacted the team's Wild Card win over the Dallas Cowboys. With so many mouths to feed in Green Bay, Musgrave will be tough to trust in fantasy as the lone option for any manager. However, he will remain a weekly streaming candidate off the waiver wire and carries more value in dynasty formats as a part of one of the best up-and-coming offenses in the league.Source: RotoBaller
10 months agoGreen Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft caught three of six targets for nine yards and a touchdown during the team's 21-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Starting tight end Luke Musgrave was slightly more productive in the yardage department Saturday night, but Kraft had the score that put the Packers ahead 21-14 in the third quarter. That score ended up being the final one of the night for Green Bay. Kraft did an admirable job filling in for Musgrave over the back half of the regular season and proved that he will still demand some sort of target share when both are healthy. However, unless something were to happen to Musgrave, Kraft would be nothing more than a waiver wire option in daily fantasy formats and a bench stash in dynasty leagues in 2024.Source: ESPN
10 months agoGreen Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson caught one of his two targets for an 11-yard gain during the team's 21-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The second-year receiver was an afterthought in the Packer's passing attack for the second week in a row and nabbed just one reception. It brings an end to a disappointing season riddled with injury for Watson, who had a good three-game stretch from Weeks 11-13 but did little else all year. Fantasy managers are going to enter the offseason questioning whether or not Watson is the unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver after a strong campaign from rookie Jayden Reed and the slew of other weapons at the Packers' disposal. The 24-year-old will not cost nearly as much as he did in drafts last year, but his value may fluctuate heading into the 2024 regular season.Source: ESPN
