Nicklas Backstrom Signs Contract Extension With Caps
5 years agoWashington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom inked a new $46 million contract extension to remain in D.C. for the next five seasons on Tuesday. The 32-year-old, who was set to become an unrestricted free-agent this upcoming summer, is the all-time franchise leader in assists and is the midst of another highly productive 13th season with the Capitals. Checking in with 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) in 39 games on the campaign, Backstrom looks poised to eclipse both 50 assists and 70 points for the seventh consecutive season. A pillar at center for the Caps for over a decade, the Swedish native remains one of the league's top puck distributors at both even-strength and on the power play. As a result, Backstrom has retained his value as a consistent top-75 fantasy asset regardless of whether or not he lines up next to Alexander Ovechkin or not. He'll be in action next versus the Devils on Thursday.
