Nick Pivetta To Remain In Bulk-Reliever Role
1 year agoDespite making Boston Red Sox history in Monday's shutout win over the Oakland Athletics, right-hander Nick Pivetta will pitch again in a bulk-relief role on Sunday night against the New York Mets. "At one point, probably, he needs to start because we're going to play (16) in a row. For now, this is the structure we like," manager Alex Cora said. The Red Sox will play 16 games in a row, starting on Aug. 15. The 30-year-old struck out a franchise-high 13 hitters in relief in six scoreless innings as the bulk reliever on Monday against the last-place A's, but he'll continue in his long-relief role for now. Pivetta came into his excellent performance on Monday with a 4.83 ERA (4.72 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, 31 walks and 81 K's in 69 innings over 22 outings (eight starts) for Boston. The Canadian has been much better out of the bullpen, posting a 2.79 ERA with 39 K's in 29 innings in 14 outings since his last start on May 16.
