Nick Anderson To Miss First Half Of Season
Nick Anderson (elbow) will be out for at least the first half of the season with a partially torn ligament in his elbow, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The news comes after a rough outing from Anderson on Wednesday, in which his velocity was down by five miles per hour while allowing a hit to four of the six batters he faced. Anderson has been one of the best relievers in Tampa Bay's bullpen since joining the Rays, posting a 2-1 record with six saves last year while posting a 44.8 percent strikeout rate, 5.2 percent walk rate and 0.55 ERA in 19 appearances. He was the fifth Rays player coming off the board in drafts with an ADP of 169, but with the possibility he will be out until early August, there is not much point in drafting him. With Anderson out, Pete Fairbanks and Diego Castillo will be the two pitchers that likely see the greatest increase in usage in high leverage or save opportunities.

Nick Anderson Has Several Suitors
Nick Anderson. Anderson threw for several teams on Thursday and is drawing interest for a one-year contract. Kubatko noted that Anderson spent the offseason with a pitching analyst, refining his mechanics to hone in on fastball metrics and split change. Last summer, Anderson posted a 4.04 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP across 35 2/3 innings in the major leagues. He struck out 29 batters and held a hefty 9.8% walk rate. In 2023, Anderson was productive with the Braves, posting a strong 3.06 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across 35 1/3 innings of work. Fantasy managers should expect Anderson to compete for a spot on an Opening Day roster during spring training.

Nick Anderson Drawing Interest On Free-Agent Market
Nick Anderson is drawing interest from multiple clubs. Alexander noted that Alexander will likely sign a one-year deal. The 34-year-old went to the Baseball Performance Center over the offseason and added a split-change to his arsenal. Last season, Anderson logged 35 2/3 innings with the Kansas Royals. He posted a 4.04 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP with 29 strikeouts before being released in July. During the 2023 season, the right-hander posted a strong 3.06 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across 35 1/3 innings with the Atlanta Braves. If Anderson were to find a suitor, he would likely have a role as a middle-relief option out of the bullpen and could eventually return to a high-leverage role.

Royals Release Nick Anderson
Nick Anderson. The veteran reliever has had success in the past, mainly with the Tampa Bay Rays and threw to a 4.04 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings for the Royals this season. Although he went unclaimed on waivers, many teams are always looking for relievers and he should be able land on his feet in another organization. Regardless of where he may wind up, Anderson can safely remain on the waiver wire.

Royals Land Nick Anderson In Trade With Braves
Nick Anderson from the Atlanta Braves on Friday in exchange for cash considerations, according to a source. The Braves were expected to non-tender Anderson, so they'll get a little cash instead. Anderson's season ended prematurely due to a shoulder injury. Before that, he went 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA (3.09 FIP), 1.10 WHIP, one save, nine walks and 36 strikeouts in 35 1/3 relief innings in his first big-league season since 2021 with the Tampa Bay Rays. As long as the 33-year-old veteran right-hander is healthy in 2024, he could be in line for a bigger late-inning role in Kansas City's bullpen.
