New Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst To Be Aggressive
7 years agoAlthough a lot is still unknown, new Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is expected to be more aggressive toward free agency than his predecessor Ted Thompson. Thompson was remarkably conservative, rarely signing any free agents, and treated the Packers almost like a college team. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers approaching the twilight of his career, that would no longer seem to be an optimal strategy. There has been some doubt that a Thompson disciple would be aggressive in roster building, but Thompson himself was notably more conservative than his mentor Ron Wolf. There is no reason to think Gutekunst wouldn’t stray from his mentor any less than Thompson did from Wolf’s team-building ideology. This is largely good news for Rodgers and receiver Jordy Nelson, as head coach Mike McCarthy requires players with specific skill sets and has proven less than capable of adapting his scheme for the talent available. If Green Bay is more aggressive in free agency in a targeted way, like adding a true deep threat, than the ceiling of Rodgers will be increased for the 2018 season.
