6 years agoColorado Avalanche forwards Mikko Rantanen and Joonas Donskoi both had two goals Thursday night, helping the team beat Calgary 5-3. Donskoi, who made his team debut, opened the scoring with a power-play goal and finished things off as well with an empty-netter. Nathan MacKinnon started his season with a power-play assist, while Philipp Grubauer pushed aside 27 shots. Rantanen missed the preseason due to a contract dispute, but it looks like he hasn't missed a beat, and his line with MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog is ready to dominate again. Donskoi, who's shown an ability to score in spurts, offers some nice depth scoring for the team.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoThe Dallas Stars have acquired right wing Mikko Rantanen in exchange for forward Logan Stankoven and two first-round picks, and two third-round picks. Rantanen was traded to the Hurricanes earlier this season and will now play for his third club. The Stars also have an eight-year extension in place with Rantanen, as he was a pending unrestricted free agent. Through 62 contests this season split between Colorado and Carolina, Rantanen has found the back of the net 27 times with 43 helpers. He has tallied 21 of his points on the power play and tallied 175 shots on goal (2.8 per game). Before this season, Rantanen scored at least 30 goals in each of his previous four seasons with a career-high of 55 during the 2022 season. In 2022, he also tallied a career-best 105 points. Fantasy managers should expect Rantanen to play on the first line alongside Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 months agoCarolina Hurricanes winger Mikko Rantanen (lower body) is set to play for Finland on Thursday against the USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Rantanen was hurt a week ago against the Minnesota Wild and missed Carolina's last game before the 4 Nations Face-Off. He did not participate in Thursday's optional morning skate but is expected to play against Team USA. In practice, Rantanen has skated alongside former Colorado Avalanche teammate Artturi Lehkonen and Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov on Finland's top line. Over his last three tournaments with Finland, Rantanen has tallied nine goals and 30 points in 26 games.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to Elliotte Friedman of SportsNet, Carolina Hurricanes right wing Mikko Rantanen (lower body) will play for Team Finland in the 4 Nations Face-Off. The star forward was unable to play in Carolina's final game before the international break with this injury but has been cleared to play for Finland. Fantasy managers should monitor Rantanen's status before their opening game on Thursday against Team USA in case he faces a setback. Before the international break, Rantanen was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to Carolina in a blockbuster deal. Across his first six contests with his new club, the 28-year-old has tallied one goal and one assist. During his first 49 games of the season in Colorado, he tallied 64 points (25 goals and 39 helpers). On Thursday, Rantanen will be a top option for DFS as he should see top minutes in the Finland offense.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 months agoAccording to Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the Colorado Avalanche are trading right wing Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-team deal. The Avalanche are acquiring Martin Necas and Jack Drury, while the Hurricanes will also receive Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks will retain half of Rantanen's salary and earn a third-round pick. Rantanen has been a mainstay on the Colorado top line for the majority of the past few seasons and was part of Colorado's Stanley Cup Championship in 2022. That same season, Rantanen tallied a career-high 105 points (55 goals, 50 helpers). This season, Rantanen has scored 25 goals and added 39 helpers across 49 contests. Fantasy managers should expect Rantanen to play on Carolina's top forward unit alongside Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
