Mike Smith Shines in New Back-up Role for Calgary
6 years agoCalgary Flames goaltender Mike Smith got the start on Sunday night and allowed only one goal on 23 shots on his way to his 13th win of the year. It was Smith’s first start since January 3rd and not only did he show no ill effects from the lack of playing time, he performed well above his .889 save percentage from this year. With David Rittich now in control of the starter’s crease in Calgary, Smith will not see as many starts but, if Sunday was any indication, it could be just what he needs to get back closer to his .912 career save percentage. As long as Rittich is the starter Smith does not need to be held however he has put himself into a position to be a priority streamer when he does get a start. Calgary has scored the second most goals in the league this season while allowing the fourth-fewest shots against, so whoever is in the crease for them holds significant fantasy value.
