Mikael Backlund Signs Two-Year Extension With Flames
1 year agoCalgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund has signed a two-year contract extension worth $4.5 million in average annual value. The 34-year-old was set to hit unrestricted free agency following the 2023-24 campaign but will seemingly stick around in Calgary for at least two additional seasons. Backlund has spent his entire 15-year career with the Flames after they took him with the 24th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The Swede has recorded 185 goals and 492 points across 908 career regular season games, including a career-high 56 points while skating in all 82 games for the second consecutive season in 2022-23. Backlund also took him his first career King Clancy Award last season, given annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice.
