One of the biggest surprises during qualifying at Phoenix on Saturday was Michael McDowell, who advanced to the final round of the session and will start from the seventh spot when the United Rentals 500(k) goes green on Sunday. This is the second strong qualifying effort in a row out of McDowell and this No. 34 Front Row Motorsports team, as they started from 17th in last weekend's race at Las Vegas. This is also McDowell's best qualifying effort ever at Phoenix Raceway. Now the question becomes, will he be able to finish that high? Over 24 career Cup Series starts at Phoenix, McDowell has an average finish of 30.6 and a best result of 16th. In other words, you should expect the No. 34 Ford to fall back in the field throughout the day on Sunday. McDowell ranked 25th in overall speed during practice on Friday.--Jordan McAbee
