Michael McDowell Ends Talladega Wrecked From The Lead
8 months agoIn the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, Michael McDowell wrecked on the last lap to place 31st. As the polesitter for this week's race, McDowell started at the front by leading a few laps early but faded toward the middle of the pack as others drove past him. McDowell would fail to score stage points during the first two stages, choosing to ride towards the middle or back of the pack to avoid wrecks and make it to the end. McDowell would use pit strategy to obtain track position during the third stage. This would pay off during the last stage of the race, as McDowell became the dominant driver who would go on to lead the most laps of all racers (36). McDowell would continuously block drivers until the final corner of the final lap. Then, while blocking Brad Keselowski, they made contact, and McDowell went spinning, finishing with a wrecked car for the second consecutive week this year. Despite leading the most laps ever in his Cup career at Talladega, this is the third consecutive Talladega race where McDowell failed to place in the Top 20 and continues a trend of five finishes outside the Top 20 in 2024.
