Michael Chavis May Be An Outfield Option
6 years agoBoston Red Sox second baseman Michael Chavis was seen tracking balls in the outfield during batting practice on Wednesday. The Red Sox would benefit from the versatility if Chavis were able to occasionally start in one of the corner outfield spots. With Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi’s ability to each play center, it would give the Red Sox the flexibility to give Jackie Bradley Jr. a rest, as he’s off to a rough start. It would also keep Chavis’ bat in the lineup as much as possible with Eduardo Nunez back from the injured list and Dustin Pedroia (knee) not far behind, playing games at Double-A Portland. Chavis is a good bat to hold on to, however, he is a risky buy until we have a better idea of his playing time going forward.

Michael Chavis Clears Waivers, Elects Free Agency
1 year agoWashington Nationals infielder Michael Chavis has cleared outright waivers and has elected to become a free agent. A once-promising prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization, the now 28-year-old appeared in 48 games with the Nationals in 2023 and limped to a .242 average with a pair of homers, one stolen base, and a .622 OPS across 96 trips to the plate. It was the fifth consecutive underwhelming season for the 2014 first-round pick as he now owns a career .238 average, 42 HR, eight SB, and a .684 OPS across 1,186 plate appearances, production that grades out 20% below the league average, as per his 80 wRC+. However, he has handled himself well throughout his minor-league career, so it's quite possible he will latch on with another club for infield depth while potentially heading overseas for the 2024 season.

Michael Chavis Not Playing Against Nationals
3 years agoPittsburgh Pirates first baseman Michael Chavis is out of the starting lineup again on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. It's the second straight game that Chavis has started on the bench against a right-handed pitcher. Instead, Josh VanMeter will get another start at the cold corner and will hit fifth in the batting order against Nationals right-hander Paolo Espino on Wednesday. Chavis has gone hitless in his last four games with eight strikeouts in 12 at-bats, and he's also hitting just .177 (15-for-85) with three home runs, eight RBI and 30 strikeouts in 24 games in the month of June to drop his season slash line to .244/.289/.418. He could drop further down the pecking order once Yoshi Tsutsugo returns from the injured list.
