Michael Chavis Clears Waivers, Elects Free Agency
1 year agoWashington Nationals infielder Michael Chavis has cleared outright waivers and has elected to become a free agent. A once-promising prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization, the now 28-year-old appeared in 48 games with the Nationals in 2023 and limped to a .242 average with a pair of homers, one stolen base, and a .622 OPS across 96 trips to the plate. It was the fifth consecutive underwhelming season for the 2014 first-round pick as he now owns a career .238 average, 42 HR, eight SB, and a .684 OPS across 1,186 plate appearances, production that grades out 20% below the league average, as per his 80 wRC+. However, he has handled himself well throughout his minor-league career, so it's quite possible he will latch on with another club for infield depth while potentially heading overseas for the 2024 season.
