4 years agoNashville Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm recorded his fifth point of the month with an assist in Thursday's 5-1 loss to Carolina. He helped Nick Cousins get Nashville's consolation goal in the final minutes of the game. Ekholm is averaging close to a point per game this month, and he's set to carry a heavy load in the upcoming weeks with both Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi out with upper-body injuries. Ekholm himself missed some time last month, but he's come back strongly with seven points in eight games. He is up to 10 points for the whole year in 20 outings with 53 shots and 26 blocks. Only two players on the struggling Predators team have managed more points and Ekholm also carries a team-best plus-seven rating. --Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

6 days agoEdmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm (undisclosed) will miss a third consecutive game on Monday against the Buffalo Sabres. He is nursing a minor injury and has been battling an illness. With Ekholm out, Jake Walman will join Evan Bouchard on the first defensive pairing for Monday's game. Following his arrival from San Jose, Walman debuted with the Oilers on Saturday against the Dallas Stars. It was a busy night for him with one assist, three shots, three blocks, and two hits across 24:40 of ice time. Skating alongside Darnell Nurse, Walman registered a plus-three rating against the Stars, but he will be trusted with a new partner in defense on Monday.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 week agoEdmonton Oilers defensemen Mattias Ekholm (illness) and John Klingberg (undisclosed) will not play in Thursday's showdown against the Montreal Canadiens. Both players missed Wednesday's practice and will come out of the lineup for at least one game. Troy Stecher and Cam Dineen will fill the gaps on the blue line, with Darnell Nurse and Brett Kulak moving up in the lineup. Dineen will make his Oilers debut on Thursday. The 26-year-old has previously skated in 34 games in the big league with the Arizona Coyotes, posting seven assists. He has flashed some offensive upside in the minors this season, leading all defensemen on the Bakersfield Condors roster with five goals and 24 assists over 45 AHL games.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoEdmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm (illness) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for Thursday's matchup against the Montreal Canadiens. Due to an illness, Ekholm was unable to finish Tuesday's game against the Anaheim Ducks, exiting the game with 13:12 remaining in the third period. According to Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch, Ekholm has been battling the illness for some time. Edmonton is now considering giving him a bit of time off to recover. Ekholm has posted 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 60 games with 134 shots and 86 blocks. Troy Stecher looks poised to return to the lineup if Ekholm doesn't play on Thursday. Strecher lacks fantasy appeal, as he has managed only six points (three goals, three assists) in 47 outings.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 months agoEdmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm (illness) is on track to play on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings. He missed Wednesday's practice due to an illness, but the Oilers will have him in the lineup on Thursday. Ekholm enters the contest riding a season-best three-game point streak. He hasn't had a point streak of at least four games during the regular season since the final few weeks of 2023-24. The Swedish blue-liner has amassed seven goals and 22 points in 50 games. Edmonton will keep Ekolm together with Evan Bouchard on the first defensive pairing. However, both are also set to spend some time with John Klingberg, who will make his Oilers debut in Thursday's game.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
