Matthew Boyd 2025 Fantasy Baseball Outlook: Looking To Build On 2024 Momentum
Matthew Boyd looked great in 2024 for the Cleveland Guardians. He posted a 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 46 strikeouts, and 13 walks in 39 innings in his return from Tommy John surgery. It was only an eight-start stretch, but the Cubs must have liked what they saw to sign him to a two-year, $29 million contract this offseason. His 27.7% strikeout rate was his highest mark since 2019, and his 3.10 xERA and 3.29 FIP both back up his performance. Boyd is primarily a fly ball pitcher, with a ground ball rate of just 33.3%. This could add some inconsistency to his performance at Wrigley, depending on how the wind blows that day. It's also unrealistic to expect a full season from the lefty, who hasn't pitched more than 80 innings in a season since 2019. ATC is projecting him for a 3.92 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 107 strikeouts in 103 innings. He is ranked as the 85th starting pitcher on Rotoballer, among many other pitchers who show good upside but lack reliability.
