Matt Wisler Stymies Mets In Spot Start
7 years agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Matt Wisler, who was pitching in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez, came into a tough situation -- he was facing a Mets team that was still giddy over their comeback win on Wednesday night. It didn't matter, as the 25-year-old righty looked nothing like the pitcher who has a sub-.500 record in the majors with an ERA over 5.00. He struck out eight on Thursday night and gave up a run over seven innings. The rotation may be in a bit of flux when Luiz Gohara joins the picture, too, but Wisler can be proud, for one night at least. He should get at least one more start.

Matt Wisler To Be Rays Opener On Friday
3 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays will utilize right-handed pitcher Matt Wisler as an opener for Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Josh Fleming will work as a bulk reliever in the game. This will be Wisler's third start as an opener this year. The 29-year-old has a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP over 12 innings on the season. Fleming, meanwhile, has struggled on the mound this year. He's made five appearances and he has pitched to a 6.32 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP while earning a 2-3 record.

Matt Wisler To Serve As Opener Versus Cubs
3 years agoTampa Bay Rays right-hander Matt Wisler will serve as the opener on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs on the road. Josh Fleming is expected to enter the game after Wisler and serve as the bulk pitcher in this one. Wisler has already made five relief appearances for the Rays this year, allowing one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out six in 4 2/3 innings. Despite the good results, the 29-year-old should be avoided in fantasy in what will likely be, at best, a two-inning outing against Chicago. Fleming, who throws from the left side, has allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while walking one and fanning 11 in 6 2/3 innings over two outings (one start) in the early going.

Matt Wisler Reaggravated Finger Injury
3 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Matt Wisler (finger) suffered an injury to his right middle finger in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. It is the same injury that landed him on the injured list twice during the regular season this year. As of now, Wisler will remain on the team's roster, according to Rays manager Kevin Cash. "As we stand right now, he's just too valuable to go away [from]," Cash told reporters. Wisler had a rough outing in Game 2, giving up a two-run home run to J.D. Martinez. However, he went on to pitch a scoreless inning in Game 3, so he may be able to play through the injury at least for the rest of the ALDS.
