Matt Chapman Set To Miss Remainder Of Season
4 years agoOakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman will undergo hip surgery, ending his 2020 season after being placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday. Chapman had been seeking a second opinion on the injury, but it evidently came back with the recommendation that he undergo surgery to correct the issue. In his absence, manager Bob Melvin has indicated that the club is comfortable with Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin holding down the hot corner moving forward, although a callup for Sheldon Neuse could be a possibility, as well. Chapman was striking out at a significant rate (35.5), but ranked among the top two percentile of batters in the Majors with an 18% barrel rate and 93.6 MPH average exit velocity. His absence creates a hole in the center of the Oakland lineup, as well as defensively at third where he was a candidate for his third straight Gold Glove. Stay tuned to off-season developments about how he is progressing ahead of ‘21.
