Matt Cassel Wins Lions Backup Quarterback Job
6 years agoDetroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel has won the preseason battle to be the team’s backup quarterback, as Jake Rudock was cut during Saturday’s wave of roster cuts. Cassel and Rudock had been competing to back up Matthew Stafford this preseason. Cassel was the front-runner entering camp based off of his experience in the league. Meanwhile, Rudock had the better preseason numbers, but it’s clear the team values Cassel’s experience. If anything were to happen to Stafford this season, the offense would take an immense hit with Cassel at the helm. However, if you’re in a league that rosters a team quarterback, Cassel can serve a purpose in the event of a Stafford injury.
