Matt Carpenter Might Not Be Ready for Opening Day
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter (back) may not be ready for Opening Day. He has resumed baseball activities in Cardinals camp, but still hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said, "If this doesn't stay on track, I don't know if he'll be timed up. Physically, I think he'll be ready. Whether he's timed up and actually ready to be at his best when we bust out of the gate in New York, I think we're at that point right now." There remains a chance Carpenter will look great in his first Grapefruit League action and be deemed ready to go, but any minor setback could push his 2018 debut past Opening Day. The Cardinals have a strong insurance policy at first base in Jose Martinez, so they won't need to rush Carpenter back onto the field until he's fully ready.
