Matt Carpenter Begins Fielding and Batting Practice
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter (back, shoulder) began hitting and fielding drills this week. The team is reportedly concerned about both Carpenter's back and his shoulder, which may lead them to sticking him at first base. Originally, Carpenter was being looked at as a super-utility infielder who could play almost any infield position. For now, manager Mike Matheny said, “I don’t think anything has changed really in our mindset. We’ll have to see how he’s doing all the way around. The shoulder is always something that we’re concerned about. He’s trying to get his back right; he’s also been trying to get his shoulder to a really good place. There might be something that would push him more toward first base than third.” Carpenter is a valuable fantasy piece when he's healthy, but he's looking like a rather big injury risk this season.
