Matt Barnes A Strong Candidate For Saves
6 years agoBoston Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes (96 strikeouts in 61 2/3 frames last year) is a strong candidate for the closing duties to open the season, but manager Alex Cora has been coy on who his closer will be on Opening Day. “You’ll find out on March 28,” Cora has said repeatedly. Ryan Brasier was a high-leverage setup man last year and is also in the mix, but an injury this spring has set him back a bit. Tyler Thornburg, Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman are the others competing for save chances. Barnes has to be considered the favorite for now, but the uncertainty around Boston's bullpen makes him merely a low-end closing option in deeper leagues.
