Mark Melancon Snatches Drama-Free Save
3 years agoSan Diego Padres closer Mark Melancon retired the Atlanta Braves in order Wednesday to collect his MLB-leading 28th save. Melancon had been scuffling of late but breezed through the bottom of the Braves order in 11 pitches, fanning two batters and forcing a ground out to end the game. Unless he continues his slide, Melancon's grip on the ninth frame appears secure. But with the Friars looking to bolster bullpen depth at the trade deadline and Drew Pomeranz and Austin Adams waiting in the wings, he needs more outings like today. With a 2.20 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 20 percent strikeout rate to complement the saves, the 36-year-old has already provided excess returns to fantasy investors that trusted him this offseason.
