Mark Melancon A Lottery Ticket For Saves
4 years agoSan Diego Padres reliever Mark Melancon could be tabbed to close games in 2021. Entering spring training, the ninth inning looked to be Drew Pomeranz' job, but subsequent injuries to the bullpen could lead to a hierarchy reshuffling. The 36-year-old Melancon enters his first year in San Diego after posting a 2.78 ERA with 11 saves with the Atlanta Braves last year. Despite just a career 22 percent strikeout rate, Melancon boasts a closer's pedigree with 205 saves across 12 seasons. RotoBaller currently lists reliever Emilio Pagan as the designated door-slammer, but the Padres appear headed for a committee with Pagan, Melancon and Pomeranz. While these arms hold ideal value in holds leagues, Melancon's 287 ADP makes him a worthwhile dart throw with a shot at double digit saves.
