Manuel Margot's Slump Extends Into May
7 years agoSan Diego Padres outfielder Manuel Margot continued his early-season hitting woes over the weekend series in Monterrey, Mexico, going hitless in eight plate appearances with five strikeouts. For the season, Margot is slashing a poor .169/.219/.270 with only eight runs, seven RBI and one home run. He is 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Margot's performance is a far cry from his offseason expectation as a legitimate 20/20 power/speed threat atop the Padres lineup. Margot has been losing playing time to outfielders Franchy Cordero and Travis Jankowski and has sank to as low as eighth in the lineup when he starts. His strong defense and vaunted reputation in the Padres organization will allot him a longer leash than most players, but his fantasy value is diminishing rapidly. Once outfielder Wil Myers (oblique) returns, opportunities will likely shrink further and Margot could see his role reduced to a platoon situation. He's not a must-own in standard leagues until he solves his issues at the dish.
