Mallex Smith Has Another Spring Training Shining Moment
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Mallex Smith sent another strong message to both his current owners and those looking at drafting him. In the fifth inning of a spring training game Thursday, he bunted down the first base line for a single. He then stole second base. Finally, on a chopper to third base, he got safely to third, saw the throw to first base and came around to score. Hopefully, this answers any lingering concerns about whether he will be ready for Opening Day or whether his speed was affected by the earlier hamstring issue. Smith is all about speed, and he's stolen exactly 16 bases each of the last two seasons. He played in just 81 games with the Rays in 2017 due to their crowded outfield, but he has a more clear path to consistent playing time this season, making him one to target late in drafts in deeper leagues for his wheels. Smith is still just 25 years old.
