7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Mallex Smith stands to benefit from the long absence of Kevin Kiermaier due to injury. Some may flinch from such opportunistic thinking, but the truth is that Smith will start the vast majority of games (often in center field) while Kiermaier is out due to injury. This eliminates one of the concerns Smith faced going into the season with three other quality outfielders on the roster. Smith relies on his speed for his offensive value, and he displays skills that allow him to put the ball into play in situations where his speed helps him reach base. He is hard to recommend in shallow leagues, but he offers the type of potential that makes him attractive in deeper leagues. Smith also went 4-for-4 with a run scored starting in center field Monday versus Texas.--Jamie Mellor
