6 years agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino was scratched from his spring training start on Tuesday with right shoulder discomfort. He will be further evaluated Tuesday afternoon. Severino is the team's expected Opening Day starter after going 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA while finishing eighth in the majors with 220 strikeouts in 32 starts in 2018. While this may be nothing, it's certainly worth keeping an eye on. Any serious ailment could cause Severino to miss the start of the regular season and would obviously hurt his fantasy value as a top-15 starting pitcher.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 months agoFree-agent right-hander Luis Severino is officially rejecting the New York Mets' $21.05 million qualifying offer for one year on Tuesday, according to a source. The Mets and Severino are allowed to discuss a potential deal for a reunion, but if he signs elsewhere on the open market, the Mets will get an extra draft pick as compensation. The Mets could get additional compensation if left-hander Sean Manaea also rejects his qualifying offer and signs with another club. Severino will be heading into his age-31 season in 2025 coming off a year in which he went 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA (4.21 FIP), a 1.24 WHIP and 161:60 K:BB in 182 innings over his 31 starts in his first year in Queens. The two-time All-Star was able to stay healthy all year, but fantasy managers probably shouldn't expect a second straight year of good health for the oft-injured hurler.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 months agoFree-agent starting pitcher Luis Severino is expected to decline the qualifying offer that the New York Mets extended to him. The qualifying offer was for one year, however, Severino is seeking a multi-year deal, looking to capitalize on the relative success of his 2024 campaign. The 30-year-old made 31 starts and pitched 182 innings, both of which were the most since 2018, posting a 3.91 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. The former 2x All-Star has until Tuesday to accept the offer, but if he does not and another team signs him, then the Mets would get draft pick compensation.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

4 months agoThe New York Mets are extending a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer to free-agent right-hander Luis Severino. If Severino rejects the team's qualifying offer and signs with another team on the open market, the Mets will receive draft-pick compensation. In his first year in Queens, Severino went 11-7 for the Mets with a 3.91 ERA (4.21 FIP), a 1.24 WHIP and a 161:60 K:BB in 182 innings over his 31 starts. The 30-year-old veteran from Dominican Republic allowed nine runs (six earned) on 17 hits while walking six and striking out 13 in his three playoff starts in October. It was a serviceable season for Severino, but his strikeout rate was still at only 21.2 percent, and injury questions aren't going to go away. Severino's fantasy value will probably be the highest if he remains with the Mets for a second go-round.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

5 months agoNew York Mets right-hander Luis Severino flew ahead of the team back to New York before his Game 3 start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series on Wednesday at Citi Field. Severino will head into Wednesday's start after allowing three earned runs in six innings for a quality start and a no-decision in Game 2 of the NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He also walked none and struck out seven. He had another quality start in his win in Game 1 of the Wild-Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, giving up three earned runs in six innings while walking two and striking out three. Dating back to the final month of the regular season, Severino has quality starts in six of his last seven starts, so he's been pitching well heading into a showdown with one of the best offenses in baseball on Wednesday. Severino didn't face the Dodgers at all in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
